Estocolmo celebra la excelencia de la ciencia española en el exterior
El pasado 24 de octubre de 2025, la Asociación de Científicos Españoles en Suecia (ACES) celebró en Estocolmo la V Edición de los Premios ACES–Margarita Salas, un encuentro que volvió a reunir a la comunidad científica hispano-sueca para reconocer la excelencia y el impacto internacional de la investigación española.
En esta ocasión, el Premio ACES–Margarita Salas 2025 en la categoría de Ciencias Químicas y Medioambientales fue otorgado al profesor Sergio M. Vicente-Serrano, investigador del Instituto Pirenaico de Ecología (CSIC), por sus contribuciones pioneras al estudio de las sequías, la variabilidad climática y el cambio climático.
Reconocido internacionalmente por el desarrollo del SPEI (Standardized Precipitation–Evapotranspiration Index), un indicador de referencia mundial para cuantificar la gravedad de las sequías, Vicente-Serrano ha sido distinguido por su capacidad para tender puentes entre la ciencia y las políticas públicas, su liderazgo en investigación climática y su compromiso con la transferencia del conocimiento científico a la acción social y medioambiental.
La jornada comenzó con un simposio científico en la Real Academia Sueca de Ciencias, entidad organizadora de los Premios Nobel, centrado en los efectos del cambio climático sobre los eventos atmosféricos extremos. Además de la conferencia ofrecida por el profesor Vicente-Serrano, el seminario incluyó dos fascinantes charlas impartidas por Ilona Riipinen (Universidad de Estocolmo) y Lars Eklundh (Universidad de Uppsala), quienes compartieron su visión sobre los desafíos científicos y sociales del cambio climático desde la perspectiva nórdica.
El evento contó con una gran asistencia de investigadores, representantes institucionales y miembros de la comunidad científica española y sueca, que disfrutaron de una jornada inspiradora, llena de intercambio de ideas, entusiasmo y celebración por la ciencia.
Posteriormente, tuvo lugar la ceremonia de entrega del galardón en la Embajada de España en Suecia, presidida por Eva Ortega-Paíno, secretaria general de Investigación del Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades.
Durante el acto intervinieron también Lucía Viñuela, presidenta de la Fundación Margarita Salas; Xesús M. Abalo, presidente de ACES; Francisco Vilaplana, organizador de los premios y miembro de la Junta Directiva de ACES; y el embajador de España en Suecia, Luis Manuel Cuesta Civís, quienes coincidieron en destacar la importancia de la diplomacia científica como motor de colaboración, innovación y progreso común.
Los Premios ACES–Margarita Salas, organizados por ACES y patrocinados por la Fundación Margarita Salas, la Fundación Ramón Areces y la Embajada de España en Suecia, se han consolidado como un referente internacional del talento investigador español en el exterior y una plataforma de diálogo entre ciencia y sociedad.
“La investigación científica nos permite entender el mundo cambiante en el que vivimos y asumir la responsabilidad de preservarlo”, destacó Vicente-Serrano durante su discurso de aceptación.
Una edición vibrante, inspiradora y muy participativa que reafirma el compromiso de ACES con la promoción de la ciencia española, la colaboración internacional y el impulso de soluciones frente a los grandes retos globales.

Stockholm celebrates the excellence of Spanish science abroad
On October 24th, 2025, the Association of Spanish Scientists in Sweden (ACES) celebrated in Stockholm the 5th Edition of the ACES–Margarita Salas Awards, an event that once again brought together the Spanish–Swedish scientific community to recognize the excellence and international impact of Spanish research.
On this occasion, the 2024 ACES–Margarita Salas Award in the category of Chemical and Environmental Sciences was granted to Professor Sergio M. Vicente-Serrano, researcher at the Pyrenean Institute of Ecology (CSIC), for his pioneering contributions to the study of droughts, climate variability, and climate change.
Internationally recognized for developing the SPEI (Standardized Precipitation–Evapotranspiration Index), a global reference indicator for quantifying drought severity, Vicente-Serrano was honored for his ability to build bridges between science and public policy, his leadership in climate research, and his commitment to transferring scientific knowledge into social and environmental action.
The day began with a scientific symposium at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the institution that organizes the Nobel Prizes, focused on the effects of climate change on extreme weather events. In addition to Professor Vicente-Serrano’s keynote lecture, the seminar featured two fascinating talks by Ilona Riipinen (Stockholm University) and Lars Eklundh (Uppsala University), who shared their insights on the scientific and societal challenges of climate change from a Nordic perspective.
The event was well attended by researchers, institutional representatives, and members of the Spanish and Swedish scientific communities, who enjoyed an inspiring day filled with lively discussions, enthusiasm, and celebration of science.
Later, the award ceremony took place at the Embassy of Spain in Sweden, presided over by Eva Ortega-Paíno, Secretary General for Research at the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities.
The ceremony also featured remarks by Lucía Viñuela, President of the Margarita Salas Foundation; Xesús M. Abalo, President of ACES; Francisco Vilaplana, organizer of the awards and member of the ACES Board; and Luis Manuel Cuesta Civís, Ambassador of Spain to Sweden, all of whom emphasized the importance of scientific diplomacy as a driver of collaboration, innovation, and shared progress.
The ACES–Margarita Salas Awards, organized by ACES and sponsored by the Margarita Salas Foundation, the Ramón Areces Foundation, and the Embassy of Spain in Sweden, have become a leading international reference for Spanish scientific talent abroad and a platform for dialogue between science and society.
“Scientific research allows us to understand the changing world we live in and to take responsibility for preserving it,” highlighted Vicente-Serrano in his acceptance speech.
