La Asociación de Científicos Españoles en Suecia (ACES) ha anunciado al ganador del Premio ACES – Margarita Salas 2025 en la categoría de Ciencias Químicas y Medioambientales: Sergio M. Vicente-Serrano, profesor de investigación en el Instituto Pirenaico de Ecología del CSIC y referente internacional en el estudio del clima y la gestión del agua.
El jurado ha valorado su impacto científico y social, especialmente su papel a la hora de conectar la ciencia con las políticas públicas frente al cambio climático. Vicente-Serrano ha contribuido al 6º Informe del Panel Intergubernamental sobre Cambio Climático (IPCC) y ha coordinado iniciativas clave en la Convención de Naciones Unidas para la Lucha contra la Desertificación. Entre sus aportaciones más reconocidas está la creación del Índice SPEI, utilizado en todo el mundo para medir sequías y apoyar la toma de decisiones en políticas medioambientales.
“Recibir este premio ha sido una enorme sorpresa y un honor”, ha declarado el investigador, destacando la importancia de acercar el conocimiento científico a la sociedad y a los responsables políticos en un contexto de cambio climático.
La ceremonia de entrega se celebrará el próximo 24 de octubre en Estocolmo, en el marco de la V edición de estos galardones, que nacieron en 2021 para reconocer la excelencia científica de investigadores españoles con impacto internacional.
Los Premios ACES – Margarita Salas toman su nombre de una de las científicas más influyentes de la historia de España y son impulsados por ACES con el patrocinio de la Fundación Margarita Salas, la Fundación Ramón Areces y la Embajada de España en Suecia.

The Association of Spanish Scientists in Sweden (ACES) has announced the winner of the 2025 ACES-Margarita Salas Award in the category of Chemical and Environmental Sciences: Sergio M. Vicente-Serrano, Research Professor at the Pyrenean Institute of Ecology (CSIC) and an international leader in the study of climate and water management.
The jury recognized his scientific and societal impact, particularly his role in bridging science and public policy in the fight against climate change. Vicente-Serrano contributed to the 6th Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and coordinated key initiatives under the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification. Among his most notable contributions is the development of the SPEI Index, a globally used tool for drought assessment and policy decision-making.
“Receiving this award has been a huge surprise and an honor” said the researcher, emphasizing the importance of bringing scientific knowledge closer to society and policymakers in the context of climate change.
The award ceremony will take place on October 24 in Stockholm, as part of the fifth edition of these awards, which were created in 2021 to recognize the scientific excellence of Spanish researchers with international impact.
The ACES-Margarita Salas Awards are named after one of Spain’s most influential scientists and are promoted by ACES with the support of the Margarita Salas Foundation, the Ramón Areces Foundation, and the Embassy of Spain in Sweden.
