El pasado lunes 21 de octubre, en el Instituto Cervantes de Estocolmo, tuvimos el placer de organizar un nuevo seminario de nuestra serie “Jóvenes Talentos, Futuras Estrellas de la Ciencia” en la Asociación de Científicos Españoles en Suecia (ACES). Este evento nos permitió explorar temas innovadores y prometedores en ciencia de la mano de Marta Martínez Sanz, Doctora en Ciencia de los Alimentos por la Universidad Politécnica de Valencia y científica titular en el Instituto de Investigación en Ciencias de la Alimentación (CIAL). Marta compartió su experiencia y conocimientos sobre el uso de fuentes de biomasa alternativas para el desarrollo de alimentos y materiales sostenibles, una investigación de vanguardia con un impacto potencial en la sostenibilidad global.
La tarde comenzó con unas palabras de bienvenida de nuestra vicepresidenta, Mireia Palomares Siles, quien inauguró el evento. Desde el primer momento, se sintió el entusiasmo en el aire; sabíamos que sería una jornada llena de ciencia e inspiración.
Después, la Dra. Martínez Sanz inició su charla llevándonos en un recorrido por su impresionante trayectoria profesional. Su carrera la ha llevado desde Suecia, donde investigó en KTH, hasta universidades en Australia y Estados Unidos, y ahora, de vuelta en España, lidera el grupo de proteínas alimentarias en el CIAL. Su dedicación y logros en el campo de la ciencia de los alimentos son un ejemplo y una fuente de inspiración para las futuras generaciones.
La charla giró en torno a un tema de gran relevancia: la búsqueda de soluciones sostenibles en un mundo marcado por el exceso de plásticos y la escasez de alimentos. Marta compartió los avances de su investigación en el uso de algas como fuente de biomasa alternativa, un recurso que podría ofrecer respuestas innovadoras y sostenibles a estos problemas. En sus palabras, el potencial de las algas y otros recursos de biomasa para la alimentación y el desarrollo de materiales es aún vasto e inexplorado.
Durante la presentación, Marta nos mostró algunos de los desarrollos más emocionantes de su trabajo, que incluyen aerogeles y oleogeles a partir de celulosa de algas. Estos materiales sostenibles, desarrollados como parte de un proyecto europeo financiado por el Consejo Europeo de Investigación (ERC, por sus siglas en inglés), tienen el potencial de revolucionar la forma en que producimos y consumimos materiales y alimentos, ofreciendo alternativas que podrían reducir significativamente el impacto ambiental.
El seminario concluyó con una ronda de preguntas en la que la talentosa Marta respondió a las inquietudes y curiosidades del público con entusiasmo y profundidad. Las ideas compartidas dejaron a todos los asistentes reflexionando sobre el papel de la ciencia y la innovación en la creación de un futuro más sostenible.

Seminar «Young Talents, Future Stars of Science»: Marta Martínez Sanz
On Monday, October 21, at the Instituto Cervantes in Stockholm, we had the pleasure of hosting a new seminar in our series «Young Talents, Future Stars of Science» with the Association of Spanish Scientists in Sweden (ACES). This event allowed us to explore innovative and promising topics in science with Marta Martínez Sanz, PhD in Food Science from the Polytechnic University of Valencia and principal scientist at the Institute of Food Science Research (CIAL). Marta shared her experience and knowledge on the use of alternative biomass sources for developing sustainable foods and materials, a cutting-edge research area with potentially transformative impacts on global sustainability.
The evening began with a welcome speech from our Vice President, Mireia Palomares Siles, who opened the event. From the outset, the atmosphere was filled with excitement, and we knew it would be a day full of science and inspiration.
Afterward, Dr. Martínez Sanz took the stage and guided us through her impressive professional journey. Her career has taken her from Sweden, where she conducted research at KTH, to universities in Australia and the United States, and now, back in Spain, she leads the food proteins group at CIAL. Her dedication and achievements in the field of food science are both an example and a source of inspiration for future generations.
The focus of her talk was on a highly relevant topic: the search for sustainable solutions in a world marked by plastic waste and food scarcity. Marta shared her research advances in using algae as an alternative biomass source, a resource that could provide innovative and sustainable answers to these global challenges. As she explained, the potential of algae and other biomass resources for food production and material development remains vast and largely untapped.
During her presentation, Marta showcased some of the most exciting developments in her work, including aerogels and oleogels made from algae cellulose. These sustainable materials, developed as part of a European project funded by the European Research Council (ERC), have the potential to revolutionize the way we produce and consume materials and food, offering alternatives that could significantly reduce environmental impact.
The seminar concluded with a Q&A session, where Marta enthusiastically and thoroughly answered questions from the audience. The ideas she shared left everyone reflecting on the role of science and innovation in creating a more sustainable future.
