El próximo 12 de marzo, de 15:00 a 16:45, el emblemático Nobel Forum del Karolinska Institutet acogerá la presentación del libro «Neuron Theory or Reticular Theory?», una obra que revisita uno de los debates científicos más relevantes y decisivos en la historia de la neurociencia.
Este encuentro propone un recorrido a finales del siglo XIX, cuando dos visiones opuestas competían por explicar la organización del sistema nervioso: ¿es el cerebro una red continua o está formado por células individuales? Un debate que marcaría de forma definitiva el rumbo de la ciencia moderna.
Programa del acto
El evento dará comienzo con unas palabras de bienvenida de S.E. el Embajador de España en Suecia, destacando la relevancia de los lazos científicos entre ambos países.
A continuación, intervendrán:
- Sten Grillner (Karolinska Institutet), quien abordará el contexto histórico del Premio Nobel y el ambiente científico en la época de Santiago Ramón y Cajal.
- Javier DeFelipe (Instituto Cajal), editor del libro, que presentará la obra y profundizará en el debate histórico entre la teoría neuronal y la teoría reticular, clave en la consolidación de la neurociencia contemporánea.
El acto continuará con un espacio de diálogo abierto con el público, moderado por Xesús Abalo, presidente de ACES, ofreciendo una oportunidad para intercambiar reflexiones con los ponentes.
La jornada concluirá con unas palabras de clausura por parte del Embajador de España en Suecia.
La publicación revisita el célebre enfrentamiento entre neuronismo y reticularismo, contextualizando la defensa de la doctrina de la neurona por parte de Cajal y su impacto duradero en la comprensión del sistema nervioso.
Desde ACES celebramos este encuentro en Estocolmo como un puente entre la historia y el presente de la ciencia, y como una muestra del dinamismo de la comunidad científica española en Suecia.

Book Presentation: «Neuron Theory or Reticular Theory?» in Stockholm
On March 12, from 15:00 to 16:45, the iconic Nobel Forum at the Karolinska Institutet will host the presentation of the book «Neuron Theory or Reticular Theory?», a work that revisits one of the most significant and decisive scientific debates in the history of neuroscience.
This event offers a journey back to the late nineteenth century, when two opposing views competed to explain the organization of the nervous system: is the brain a continuous network, or is it composed of individual cells? A debate that would ultimately shape the course of modern science.
Program
The event will begin with welcoming remarks by H.E. the Ambassador of Spain to Sweden, highlighting the importance of scientific ties between the two countries.
The speakers will include:
- Sten Grillner (Karolinska Institutet), who will address the historical context of the Nobel Prize and the scientific environment during the time of Santiago Ramón y Cajal.
- Javier DeFelipe (Instituto Cajal), editor of the book, who will present the volume and explore in depth the historical debate between neuron theory and reticular theory, a key milestone in the consolidation of contemporary neuroscience.
The event will continue with an open discussion and Q&A session with the audience, moderated by Xesús Abalo, President of ACES, offering an opportunity to exchange reflections with the speakers.
The session will conclude with closing remarks by the Ambassador of Spain to Sweden.
