La Asociación de Científicos Españoles en Suecia (ACES) ha galardonado el Premio ACES – Margarita Salas 2025 en la categoría de Ciencias Químicas y Medioambientales a Sergio M. Vicente-Serrano, profesor de investigación en el Instituto Pirenaico de Ecología del CSIC y referente internacional en el estudio del clima y la gestión del agua.
El jurado ha valorado su impacto científico y social, especialmente su papel a la hora de conectar la ciencia con las políticas públicas frente al cambio climático. Vicente-Serrano ha contribuido al 6º Informe del Panel Intergubernamental sobre Cambio Climático (IPCC) y ha coordinado iniciativas clave en la Convención de Naciones Unidas para la Lucha contra la Desertificación. Entre sus aportaciones más reconocidas está la creación del Índice SPEI, utilizado en todo el mundo para medir sequías y apoyar la toma de decisiones en políticas medioambientales.
“Recibir este premio ha sido una enorme sorpresa y un honor”, ha declarado el investigador, destacando la importancia de acercar el conocimiento científico a la sociedad y a los responsables políticos en un contexto de cambio climático.
La ceremonia de entrega se celebrará el próximo 24 de octubre en Estocolmo, en el marco de la V edición de estos galardones, que nacieron en 2021 para reconocer la excelencia científica de investigadores españoles con impacto internacional. Además, y como ya es tradición, ese mismo 24 de octubre celebraremos un simposio en la Real Academia Sueca de Ciencias acerca del campo de investigación del galardonado.
Los Premios ACES – Margarita Salas toman su nombre de una de las científicas más influyentes de la historia de España y son impulsados por ACES con el patrocinio de la Fundación Margarita Salas, la Fundación Ramón Areces y la Embajada de España en Suecia.

Nota de prensaThe Spanish Scientists Association in Sweden (ACES) has awarded the ACES – Margarita Salas Prize 2025 in the category of Chemical and Environmental Sciences to Sergio M. Vicente-Serrano, research professor at the Pyrenean Institute of Ecology (CSIC) and an international leader in climate and water management studies.
The jury highlighted his scientific and social impact, especially his role in connecting science with public policies in the fight against climate change. Vicente-Serrano contributed to the 6th Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and has coordinated key initiatives within the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification. Among his most recognized contributions is the creation of the SPEI Index, widely used worldwide to measure droughts and support decision-making in environmental policies.
“Receiving this award has been an enormous surprise and an honor,” said the researcher, emphasizing the importance of bringing scientific knowledge closer to society and policymakers in the context of climate change.
The award ceremony will take place on October 24th in Stockholm, as part of the 5th edition of these awards, which were established in 2021 to recognize the scientific excellence of Spanish researchers with international impact. In addition, as is tradition, a symposium will be held on the same day at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, focusing on the awardee’s research field.
The ACES – Margarita Salas Prizes are named after one of the most influential scientists in Spain’s history and are promoted by ACES with the support of the Margarita Salas Foundation, the Ramón Areces Foundation, and the Spanish Embassy in Sweden.

La Asociación de Científicos Españoles en Suecia (ACES) lanza la quinta edición de los Premios ACES – Margarita Salas, cuyo objetivo es reconocer la excelencia científica de investigadores de nacionalidad española con un impacto ejemplar en la sociedad y en la comunidad científica internacional. Estos galardones rinden homenaje a la figura de Margarita Salas, referente indiscutible de la ciencia española.
Categoría 2025: Ciencias Químicas y Medioambientales
Este año, la categoría premiada será Ciencias Químicas y Medioambientales, que incluye investigaciones en:
- Química
- Ciencia de los materiales
- Biología medioambiental (no biomédica)
- Zoología
- Botánica
- Geología
- Paleontología
…y otras áreas relacionadas.
Plazo de presentación de candidaturas
Las asociaciones que integran RAICEX podrán presentar sus candidaturas hasta el 31 de mayo de 2025 a las 23:59 h CEST.

The Association of Spanish Scientists in Sweden (ACES) is launching the fifth edition of the ACES – Margarita Salas Awards, aimed at recognizing the scientific excellence of researchers of Spanish nationality who have made an exemplary impact on society and the international scientific community. These awards pay tribute to Margarita Salas, an undisputed icon of Spanish science.
2025 Category: Chemical and Environmental Sciences
This year, the awarded category will be Chemical and Environmental Sciences, which includes research in:
- Chemistry
- Materials Science
- Environmental Biology (non-biomedical)
- Zoology
- Botany
- Geology
- Paleontology
…and other related areas.
Application Deadline
The associations that are part of RAICEX may submit their nominations until May 31, 2025, at 23:59 CEST.
