El pasado 20 de marzo, la Kungliga Vetenskapsakademien (KVA) acogió el esperado Simposio del Premio ACES-Margarita Salas 2024. Este evento reunió a destacados científicos, autoridades y miembros de la comunidad investigadora en un entorno de intercambio de conocimiento y reconocimiento a la excelencia científica.
Un Evento de Alto Nivel en un Entorno Emblemático
El simposio, guiado por el representante de ACES y RAICEX, Francisco Vilaplana, contó con la participación del embajador de España en Suecia, Luis Manuel Cuesta Civís, la Secretaria General del Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades de España, Eva Ortega Paíno, y el presidente de ACES, Xesús Abalos. La jornada inició con una cálida bienvenida.
Ponencias Inspiradoras y Diálogo Científico
Uno de los momentos más esperados del simposio fue la ponencia de la galardonada, la profesora Beatriz Roldán Cuenya, directora del Departamento de Ciencia de Interfases en el Fritz Haber Institute de la Sociedad Max Planck (Berlín). Su charla, titulada “The Secret Life of Catalysts Unveiled by Operando Spectroscopy and Microscopy”, ofreció una visión detallada de su trabajo pionero en materiales nanoestructurados aplicados a la catálisis y la conversión energética.
Además, el evento contó con la participación de otros distinguidos científicos:
- Prof. Lindsay Merte (Universidad de Malmö): Especialista en la estructura y propiedades de superficies sólidas aplicadas a la catálisis y la corrosión.
- Dr. Selma Maric (MAX IV Laboratories, Universidad de Lund): Experta en técnicas avanzadas de rayos X y neutrones.
- Prof. Anders Nilsson (Universidad de Estocolmo): Reconocido por su trabajo en transformaciones químicas de energía mediante el uso de rayos X.
Las ponencias fueron seguidas de una animada sesión de preguntas, donde el público pudo interactuar con los expertos y profundizar en los temas abordados.
Un Encuentro para la Ciencia y la Comunidad
El simposio también brindó la oportunidad de conocer a los miembros de ACES y la comunidad científica sueca en un ambiente distendido. Durante la pausa, los asistentes disfrutaron de un tradicional fika, un momento ideal para el networking y el intercambio de ideas.
Ceremonia en la Embajada de España en Suecia
Por la tarde, la celebración continuó en la Embajada de España en Suecia, donde tuvo lugar la ceremonia oficial de entrega del Premio ACES-Margarita Salas 2024. El acto fue inaugurado por el embajador de España, D. Luis Manuel Cuesta Civís, y contó con la participación de Xesús Abalo (presidente de ACES), el Prof. Francisco Vilaplana (delegado de RAICEX) y Lucía Viñuela (presidenta de la Fundación Margarita Salas).
La profesora Beatriz Roldán Cuenya recibió el galardón de manos de la Dra. Eva Ortega Paíno. En su discurso de agradecimiento, Roldán Cuenya expresó su gratitud a las fundaciones y asociaciones involucradas, así como al jurado, y aprovechó la ocasión para hacer un llamamiento a la libertad en el contexto actual de la guerra en Ucrania. Sus palabras fueron respaldadas por el embajador español durante la cena posterior, subrayando la importancia de la ciencia en la construcción de un mundo más justo y pacífico.
Una Celebración de la Ciencia Española
El Premio ACES-Margarita Salas 2024 ha sido un reconocimiento al impacto global de la investigación española en el ámbito de la nanotecnología, la catálisis y la mentoría científica. On March 20th, the Kungliga Vetenskapsakademien (KVA) hosted the highly anticipated ACES-Margarita Salas Award Symposium 2024. This event brought together renowned scientists, authorities, and research community members in an environment dedicated to knowledge exchange and the recognition of scientific excellence.
A High-Level Event in a Prestigious Setting
The symposium, led by ACES and RAICEX representative Francisco Vilaplana, featured the participation of the Spanish Ambassador to Sweden, Luis Manuel Cuesta Civís, the Secretary General of the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, Eva Ortega Paíno, and the President of ACES, Xesús Abalos. The day began with a warm welcome and an introduction to the Kungliga Vetenskapsakademien, highlighting its significance in the international scientific landscape.
Inspiring Talks and Scientific Dialogue
One of the most eagerly awaited moments of the symposium was the lecture by the awardee, Professor Beatriz Roldán Cuenya, Director of the Department of Interface Science at the Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society (Berlin). Her talk, “The Secret Life of Catalysts Unveiled by Operando Spectroscopy and Microscopy”, provided a detailed insight into her pioneering work on nanostructured materials applied to catalysis and energy conversion.
Additionally, the event featured distinguished scientists, including:

In the afternoon, the celebration continued at the Spanish Embassy in Sweden, where the official ACES-Margarita Salas Award 2024 ceremony took place. The event was opened by the Spanish Ambassador, Luis Manuel Cuesta Civís, and included the participation of Xesús Abalo (President of ACES), Prof. Francisco Vilaplana (RAICEX delegate), and Lucía Viñuela (President of the Margarita Salas Foundation).
Professor Beatriz Roldán Cuenya received the award from Dr. Eva Ortega Paíno. In her acceptance speech, Roldán Cuenya expressed her gratitude to the involved foundations and associations, as well as to the jury. She also took the opportunity to make a call for freedom in the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine. Her words were echoed later in the evening by the Spanish Ambassador, emphasizing the crucial role of science in building a more just and peaceful world.
