“The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science.”

Launch of the ACES Mentoring Programme 2026–2027
On 3 September, ACES celebrated the launch of a new edition of its Mentoring Programme 2026–2027 at Viña Española, in the heart of Stockholm. The event brought together a large group of researchers and professionals from the ACES community, reaching full capacity and marking the beginning of a new cycle of learning, knowledge exchange, and collaboration.
The evening began with an official presentation of the programme by its organisers, Leire Alonso Galicia and Ingrid Campo Ruiz, who introduced the objectives and structure of this new edition. The programme has received an excellent response, with a large number of participants interested in sharing experiences, knowledge, and perspectives, while building new connections within the scientific community.
We were then delighted to welcome Mafalda Oliveira, Senior Consultant in the Breast Cancer Group at the Vall d’Hebron Institute of Oncology. Although she was ultimately unable to join us in person, Mafalda kindly participated virtually and shared her professional journey, as well as some of the experiences and lessons that have shaped her career.
In a warm and inspiring talk, Mafalda reflected on her professional journey and on how scientific careers do not always follow a straight path. She shared valuable advice on the importance of remaining curious, being open to new opportunities, and learning from the different experiences and stages that arise throughout a career. Among the ideas she shared, she highlighted an inspiring quote by Albert Einstein:
“The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science.”
Mafalda also spoke about her transition from clinical questions to research questions, highlighting how different professional experiences can contribute to shaping an individual scientific journey. Her talk generated great interest among the audience and was followed by a Q&A session, which provided an enriching opportunity for discussion and exchange.
Following the talk, the new mentor–mentee pairs for the 2026–2027 edition were officially introduced, marking the beginning of a new year of mentoring, learning, and collaboration.
The evening concluded with a networking session accompanied by Spanish tapas, generously hosted by Pablo Barragán and Salmantinos. In a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, participants had the opportunity to get to know one another, exchange experiences, and begin building the relationships that will accompany them throughout this new mentoring cycle.
ACES would like to express its sincere gratitude to Leire Alonso Galicia and Ingrid Campo Ruiz for their dedication and organisation, to Mafalda Oliveira for sharing her career journey and valuable insights with our community, and to Pablo Barragán and Salmantinos for hosting us and helping make this event possible.
We would also like to thank all the participants who joined us and made this kickoff such a special event. The full capacity of the venue once again demonstrated the strong interest and commitment of our community to knowledge exchange, professional development, and collaboration.
We wish all the mentor–mentee pairs an excellent 2026–2027 mentoring cycle, filled with learning, new connections, and opportunities for professional and personal growth.
Wishing everyone great success on this new mentoring journey!
