El pasado 25 de noviembre celebramos la primera edición de la Ernest Arenas Memorial Lecture, un acto organizado por el Karolinska Institutet en colaboración con ACES para honrar el legado científico y humano del Profesor Ernest Arenas.
La conferencia inaugural estuvo a cargo del Profesor Roger Barker, catedrático de Neurociencia Clínica en la Universidad de Cambridge y referente internacional en el estudio de las enfermedades neurodegenerativas. Al inicio del evento, y en nombre de KI y ACES, le ofrecimos un pequeño obsequio como muestra de agradecimiento por acompañarnos en un día tan significativo.
Bajo el título “Reparar el cerebro humano mediante trasplantes: ¿es posible? La historia de la enfermedad de Parkinson”, el Profesor Barker impartió una charla centrada en los avances recientes en nuevas terapias experimentales, incluyendo estrategias celulares y génicas aplicadas a trastornos como el Parkinson. Su presentación despertó un gran interés entre los asistentes y dio lugar a una animada ronda de preguntas.
El ponente dedicó también unas palabras emotivas al Profesor Ernest Arenas, destacando sus contribuciones esenciales al campo de la neurociencia y recordándolo como un amigo cercano, un colega brillante y una fuente constante de inspiración.
El encuentro concluyó con un cóctel, donde los participantes tuvieron la oportunidad de continuar la conversación en un ambiente distendido y enriquecedor.

Ernest Arenas Memorial Lecture 2025 – Summary
On November 25, we held the first edition of the Ernest Arenas Memorial Lecture, an event organized by the Karolinska Institutet in collaboration with ACES to honor the scientific and human legacy of Professor Ernest Arenas.
The inaugural lecture was delivered by Professor Roger Barker, Chair of Clinical Neuroscience at the University of Cambridge and an internationally recognized leader in the study of neurodegenerative diseases. At the beginning of the event, on behalf of KI and ACES, we presented him with a small gift as a token of our gratitude for joining us on such a meaningful occasion.
Under the title “Repairing the Human Brain Through Transplants: Is It Possible? The Story of Parkinson’s Disease”, Professor Barker gave a talk focused on recent advances in experimental therapies, including cell-based and gene-based strategies applied to disorders such as Parkinson’s. His presentation generated great interest among the audience and led to a lively question-and-answer session.
He also shared heartfelt words about Professor Ernest Arenas, highlighting his essential contributions to the field of neuroscience and remembering him as a close friend, a brilliant colleague, and a constant source of inspiration.
The event concluded with a reception, where participants had the opportunity to continue the discussion in a relaxed and enriching atmosphere.
We sincerely thank all attendees for their presence and enthusiasm. This first edition marks the beginning of an annual series dedicated to keeping Ernest Arenas’s legacy alive and continuing to promote scientific dialogue in our field.
