El camino de una científica emergente: Mentoría, liderazgo y vida más allá del laboratorio
El pasado lunes 9 de junio de 2025 celebramos en la Embajada de España en Estocolmo el acto de clausura del Programa de Mentoring de ACES 2024–2025, una iniciativa que busca conectar a jóvenes científic@s con profesionales experimentados del ámbito académico e industrial, fomentando así el desarrollo personal y profesional de nuestra comunidad en Suecia.
La velada comenzó con unas cálidas palabras de bienvenida por parte del Embajador de España en Suecia, Luis Manuel Cuesta Civís, quien destacó la importancia de construir redes de apoyo y mentoría entre españoles en el extranjero, especialmente en el mundo científico.
A continuación, intervino Ricardo Vinuesa, vocal de ACES por Estocolmo y organizador principal del programa de mentorazgo. Ricardo hizo un breve repaso del desarrollo del programa, subrayando la implicación y compromiso de todos los participantes, así como el impacto positivo que esta experiencia ha tenido en los mentees y mentores.
La ponente invitada, Dra. Ana Ortega Molina, cerró el ciclo con una inspiradora charla titulada “El camino de una científica emergente: Mentoría, liderazgo y vida más allá del laboratorio”.
La Dra. Ortega Molina es investigadora principal en el Centro de Biología Molecular Severo Ochoa (CBMSO). Tras doctorarse en Biomedicina por la Universidad de Salamanca, desarrolló su carrera postdoctoral en instituciones de prestigio como el CNIO (Madrid) y el Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (Nueva York). Actualmente lidera su propio grupo de investigación centrado en el estudio de la biología del cáncer y mecanismos de resistencia terapéutica. Durante su intervención, compartió con honestidad y cercanía su trayectoria, las decisiones clave que marcaron su carrera, los desafíos personales y profesionales, y el papel fundamental que la mentoría ha tenido en su desarrollo como científica y líder.
El acto concluyó con preguntas de la audiencia y un resumen de las actividades realizadas por los mentees y mentores durante el programa, seguido de un animado cóctel con tapas españolas, que facilitó el intercambio de experiencias y la conexión entre miembros de ACES y asistentes.
Desde ACES, queremos dar las gracias a todas las personas que han hecho posible este evento y, especialmente, a quienes participaron en el programa de mentorazgo a lo largo del año. Esperamos que esta iniciativa haya sido enriquecedora y útil para todos, y deseamos poder continuar con ella en futuras ediciones.

Closing of the ACES Mentoring Program 2024–2025
The Journey of an Emerging Scientist: Mentorship, Leadership, and Life Beyond the Lab
Last Monday, June 9, 2025, we gathered at the Embassy of Spain in Stockholm to celebrate the closing event of the ACES Mentoring Program 2024–2025, an initiative aimed at connecting young scientists with experienced professionals from both academia and industry, thereby promoting the personal and professional development of our community in Sweden.
The evening began with warm welcoming remarks from the Ambassador of Spain to Sweden, Luis Manuel Cuesta Civís, who emphasized the importance of building support and mentoring networks among Spaniards abroad—especially within the scientific community.
Next, Ricardo Vinuesa, ACES representative in Stockholm and main organizer of the mentoring program, took the floor. He gave a brief overview of the program’s development, highlighting the strong commitment and involvement of all participants, as well as the positive impact this experience has had on both mentees and mentors.
The invited speaker, Dr. Ana Ortega Molina, brought the event to a close with an inspiring talk entitled “The Journey of an Emerging Scientist: Mentorship, Leadership, and Life Beyond the Lab.”
Dr. Ortega Molina is a Principal Investigator at the Severo Ochoa Centre for Molecular Biology (CBMSO). After earning her PhD in Biomedicine from the University of Salamanca, she pursued postdoctoral research at prestigious institutions such as the CNIO (Madrid) and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (New York). She currently leads her own research group, focusing on cancer biology and mechanisms of therapeutic resistance. In her talk, she shared with honesty and warmth the key moments in her career, the personal and professional challenges she has faced, and the crucial role that mentorship has played in her development as a scientist and leader.
The event concluded with a Q&A session and a summary of the activities carried out by mentees and mentors throughout the year, followed by a lively cocktail reception featuring Spanish tapas, which fostered engaging conversations and connections among ACES members and attendees.
From ACES, we want to sincerely thank everyone who made this event possible and, most of all, those who took part in the mentoring program throughout the year. We hope this initiative has been enriching and valuable for all and that we can continue it in the years to come.
