El olivo, pilar de la agricultura y la economía mediterránea, se enfrenta a amenazas invisibles pero muy relevantes: enfermedades fúngicas como la antracnosis y el escudete. Estos patógenos pueden afectar a las hojas, frutos e incluso a la madera, comprometiendo la salud del árbol y poniendo en riesgo cosechas enteras.
En esta conferencia, el investigador Juan Moral, especialista internacional en fitopatología del olivo, explicará:
- Cómo identificar las principales enfermedades que afectan al olivar.
- Los factores que favorecen su aparición.
- Las soluciones sostenibles que la ciencia propone hoy para proteger este cultivo fundamental.
La sesión ofrecerá una visión cercana y accesible sobre problemas que, aunque invisibles a simple vista, tienen un enorme impacto en la agricultura mediterránea y en la producción de aceite de oliva.
Sobre el ponente
Juan Moral es investigador Ramón y Cajal en el Departamento de Agronomía de la Universidad de Córdoba, dentro del grupo UCOlivo-Patología Agroforestal. Natural de Torredelcampo (Jaén), se formó como Ingeniero Agrónomo en la Universidad de Almería y obtuvo su doctorado en 2009 con una tesis sobre enfermedades del olivo.
Ha trabajado en centros de referencia tanto en España (Instituto de Agricultura Sostenible – IAS, Instituto de Agroquímica y Tecnología de Alimentos – IATA), como en el extranjero: Israel (Volcani Center), Italia (Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore) y Estados Unidos (UC Davis, Fresno State).
En 2024 recibió el prestigioso premio Lee M. Hutchins (Tree Doctor Award), otorgado por la American Phytopathological Society, que lo reconoce como el mejor investigador mundial en enfermedades de árboles, siendo el primer científico español en obtenerlo.
Durante su intervención abordará en detalle dos patologías clave:
- Antracnosis del olivo, una infección fúngica que causa manchas, caída de hojas y pérdida de aceitunas, con impacto directo en la producción.
- Escudete del olivo, menos conocida pero igualmente dañina, que afecta la madera desde el interior y debilita al árbol de forma silenciosa.

Talk “Biology of the Most Common Olives Diseases” – Juan Moral (University of Córdoba)
The olive tree, a cornerstone of Mediterranean agriculture and economy, faces invisible yet highly significant threats: fungal diseases such as anthracnose and olive scab. These pathogens can affect the leaves, fruits, and even the wood, compromising the tree’s health and putting entire harvests at risk.
In this lecture, Juan Moral, an international expert in olive tree pathology, will explain:
- How to identify the main diseases affecting olive trees.
- The factors that favor their development.
- The sustainable solutions that science is currently offering to protect this essential crop.

About the speaker
Juan Moral is a Ramón y Cajal Researcher at the Department of Agronomy of the University of Córdoba, within the UCOlivo-Agroforestry Pathology group. Originally from Torredelcampo (Jaén, Spain), he trained as an Agricultural Engineer at the University of Almería and obtained his PhD in 2009 with a dissertation on olive tree diseases.
He has carried out research in leading institutions both in Spain (Institute for Sustainable Agriculture – IAS, Institute of Agrochemistry and Food Technology – IATA) and abroad: Israel (Volcani Center), Italy (Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore), and the United States (UC Davis, Fresno State).
In 2024, he received the prestigious Lee M. Hutchins Award (Tree Doctor Award), granted by the American Phytopathological Society, which recognized him as the world’s leading researcher in tree diseases, becoming the first Spanish scientist to receive this honor.
During his talk, he will focus in particular on two key olive diseases:
- Olive anthracnose, a fungal infection that causes leaf spots, fruit loss, and a direct impact on production.
- Olive scab, less well known but equally harmful, which silently damages the tree’s wood from within, weakening it over time.
