El pasado 9 de septiembre tuvimos el placer de acoger en el Instituto Cervantes de Estocolmo la conferencia “Biología de las enfermedades más comunes de la aceituna”, impartida por el Dr. Juan Moral, investigador del Departamento de Agronomía de la Universidad de Córdoba y miembro del grupo UCOlivo-Patología Agroforestal.
El evento comenzó con unas palabras de bienvenida de Javier Galván, director del Instituto Cervantes en Estocolmo. A continuación, Julia Sánchez Ceinos, vocal de comunicación de ACES, presentó al ponente destacando su trayectoria y logros: desde su formación en Ingeniería Agronómica y su doctorado sobre enfermedades del olivo, hasta sus estancias en centros internacionales de investigación y la obtención en 2024 del prestigioso Lee M. Hutchins Award por la American Phytopathological Society, siendo el primer científico español en recibirlo.
Durante su charla, Juan Moral ofreció una explicación cercana y accesible sobre las enfermedades que afectan al olivo, un cultivo fundamental de la agricultura mediterránea. Entre los temas tratados, destacó:
- La antracnosis del olivo, un hongo que provoca manchas, caída de hojas y pérdida de aceitunas.
- El escudete del olivo, patología menos conocida que afecta la madera desde el interior, debilitando el árbol de manera silenciosa.
- Factores que favorecen la aparición de estas enfermedades y estrategias sostenibles para mitigarlas.
El Dr. Moral compartió además experiencias de primera mano desde Jaén, mostrando cómo su investigación busca mejorar la salud de los olivos y la productividad de los agricultores. Durante la sesión, los asistentes pudieron conocer historias científicas fascinantes sobre la interacción entre insectos y olivos y la labor de su grupo en la Universidad de Córdoba.
Tras la charla, se abrió un turno de preguntas muy enriquecedor, donde los asistentes pudieron profundizar en los temas tratados. La jornada concluyó con una degustación de aceites de oliva españoles, acompañada de una guía de cata que permitirá apreciar las distintas variedades: Picual, Picudo, Arbequina, Hojiblanca, Aceite de Algarinejo y Aceite Ecológico de Baena. Fue un evento muy agradable y enriquecedor, que combinó ciencia, cultura y gastronomía, y del que todos los asistentes disfrutaron enormemente. Talk: “Biology of the Most Common Olive Tree Diseases” – Dr. Juan Moral
On September 9, we had the pleasure of hosting the conference “Biology of the Most Common Olive Tree Diseases” at the Instituto Cervantes in Stockholm. The talk was given by Dr. Juan Moral, researcher in the Department of Agronomy at the University of Córdoba and member of the UCOlivo-Agroforestry Pathology group.
The event began with a welcome by Javier Galván, director of the Instituto Cervantes in Stockholm. Then, Julia Sánchez Ceinos, ACES Communication Officer, introduced the speaker, highlighting his career and achievements: from his training in Agricultural Engineering and his PhD on olive tree diseases, to his research stays at leading international centers and his receipt of the prestigious Lee M. Hutchins Award from the American Phytopathological Society in 2024, becoming the first Spanish scientist to receive it.
During his talk, Juan Moral provided a clear and accessible explanation of the diseases that affect olive trees, a key crop in Mediterranean agriculture. Key topics included:
- Olive anthracnose, a fungal infection that causes leaf and fruit drop, directly affecting production.
- Olive scaly bark disease, a lesser-known pathology that affects the wood internally, weakening the tree silently.
- Factors that favor the appearance of these diseases and sustainable strategies to mitigate them.
Dr. Moral also shared first-hand experiences from Jaén, showing how his research aims to improve olive tree health and farmers’ productivity. Attendees enjoyed fascinating scientific stories about the interactions between insects and olive trees, and the work of his research group at the University of Córdoba.
After the talk, there was a highly engaging Q&A session, allowing the audience to delve deeper into the topics discussed. The event concluded with a tasting of Spanish olive oils, accompanied by a tasting guide to explore different varieties: Picual, Picudo, Arbequina, Hojiblanca, Aceite de Algarinejo, and Organic Baena Olive Oil.
