El pasado miércoles 4 de diciembre tuvimos el placer de celebrar nuestra Asamblea General ACES 2024 en un lugar muy especial: la Embajada de España en Estocolmo. Desde aquí queremos agradecer a su excelencia, el Embajador de España en Suecia, Luis Manuel Cuesta Civís, por abrirnos las puertas de la embajada una vez más y por su cálida bienvenida, destacando el estrecho vínculo entre la embajada y ACES.
El evento comenzó con las palabras del presidente de ACES, Xesús M. Abalo, quien junto a la vicepresidenta, Mireia Palomares Siles, repasó todas las actividades realizadas este año. Entre ellas, destacó la celebración del décimo aniversario de ACES, una ocasión que fue reconocida y celebrada por muchas personas que enviaron mensajes de felicitación. Todos estos mensajes se recopilaron en un emotivo vídeo que compartimos en nuestro canal de YouTube.
En el ámbito de la comunicación, hemos tenido cambios importantes. A principios de año, despedimos con cariño a Yovana Cabrera Hernández, quien regresó a España, y dimos la bienvenida a Julia Sánchez Ceinos como nueva vocal de comunicación. Julia, con el apoyo de María Bueno, se encarga de dinamizar nuestras redes sociales (Instagram, Facebook y la página web), mientras que Mireia gestiona LinkedIn y Xesús la newsletter. ¡Un equipo renovado y con energía renovada!
También estamos trabajando en una nueva página web, que verá la luz a principios de 2025. Será más moderna y funcional, así que si tienes ideas o sugerencias, ¡no dudes en hacérnoslas llegar!
Este año, hemos organizado tres eventos de Ciencia y Empresa, liderados por Antonio Bermejo y María Badal: Asraa Ziadi (agente de patentes) y Aitor Bermejo (científico en R&D) en Potter & Clarkson, Elena Hoffer (co-fundadora de Alma.Me) y Armando Cazáres-Körner (lab manager en A Working Lab) en A Working Lab, y Paloma Ruiz Castroviejo (científica en I+D en Basic Genomics AB) y Katarina Färnegårdh (manager de propiedad intelectual y directora de subvenciones en Oncopeptides) en Apotekarsocieteten.
Además de otros tres encuentros de jóvenes talentos científicos: Celia Escudero (investigadora potdoctoral senior en Kiel, Alemania), Rubén D. Costa (catedrático en la Universidad Técnica de Munich, Alemania), y Marta Martínez Sanz (científica titular en el Instituto de Investigación en Ciencias de la Alimentación, CIAL).
También continuamos con el exitoso curso de Comunicación Científica de la Universidad de Uppsala, coordinado por Eva Garmendia y Hugo Gutiérrez, y el Programa de Mentorazgo con Ricardo Vinuesa al frente.
En 2024, otorgamos cuatro becas de viaje y estancias cortas, en honor a Ernest Arenas, a: Irene Hernández Lozano, Diego Vera Yunca, Ana María Labrador García, y Alberto García Fernández.
Otro momento destacado fue la entrega del Premio ACES-Margarita Salas III Edición en la categoría de Ciencias Biomédicas a Ana Fernández Sesma, reconociendo su contribución al avance científico.
Además, presentamos el informe de tesorería, de la mano de Leire Alonso Galicia, con unas cuentas muy positivas.
También incorporamos nuevos representantes en los nodos de Umeå (Daniel Rea, estudiante de doctorado en la Universidad de Umeå), Skåne (Tania Ramos Moreno, líder de grupo en el Lund Stem Cell Center) y Gotemburgo (Julia Fernández Rodríguez, directora del Centre for Cellular Imaging de la Universidad de Gotemburgo). ¡Y ya somos más de 300 socios! El socio número 300, Adrián, recibió un obsequio conmemorativo.
El evento concluyó con una nota divertida y deliciosa. Francisco Vilaplana nos actualizó sobre RAICEX y, junto con Antonio, ofreció una charla divulgativa sobre la historia y la ciencia detrás de las croquetas, ¡nuestro plato más representativo!
Tras la charla, tuvo lugar una competición de degustación en la que cada asistente trajo su versión del plato. Anónimamente, votamos las mejores croquetas, y el ganador fue Alejandro García Fernández, con sus croquetas de chorizo y huevo, quien recibió un regalo simbólico.
Desde ACES queremos dar las gracias a todos los asistentes y colaboradores por un año increíble lleno de aprendizajes, proyectos y momentos compartidos. ¡Nos vemos en 2025 con más iniciativas y la misma pasión!
ACES General Assembly 2024
Last Wednesday, December 4th, we had the pleasure of holding our ACES 2024 General Assembly in a very special location: the Embassy of Spain in Stockholm. We would like to thank His Excellency, the Ambassador of Spain to Sweden, Luis Manuel Cuesta Civís, for once again opening the doors of the embassy to us and for his warm welcome, highlighting the close connection between the embassy and ACES.
The event began with remarks from ACES President, Xesús M. Abalo, who, alongside Vice President Mireia Palomares Siles, reviewed all the activities conducted this year. Among the highlights was the celebration of ACES’ 10th anniversary, an occasion recognized and celebrated by many people who sent congratulatory messages. These messages were compiled into a heartfelt video that we shared on our YouTube channel.
In the area of communication, we have experienced significant changes. Early in the year, we bade a fond farewell to Yovana Cabrera Hernández, who returned to Spain, and welcomed Julia Sánchez Ceinos as the new Communications Officer. Julia, supported by María Bueno, oversees our social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, and the website), while Mireia manages LinkedIn and Xesús the newsletter. A revamped and energized team!
We are also working on a new website, set to launch in early 2025. It will be more modern and functional, so if you have ideas or suggestions, don’t hesitate to share them!

Additionally, we hosted three young scientific talent talks with: Celia Escudero (senior postdoctoral researcher in Kiel, Germany); Rubén D. Costa (professor at the Technical University of Munich, Germany); and Marta Martínez Sanz (tenured scientist at the Food Science Research Institute, CIAL).
We also continued the highly successful Scientific Communication course at Uppsala University, coordinated by Eva Garmendia and Hugo Gutiérrez, and the Mentorship Program, led by Ricardo Vinuesa.
In 2024, we awarded four travel and short-stay scholarships in honor of Ernest Arenas to: Irene Hernández Lozano, Diego Vera Yunca, Ana María Labrador García, and Alberto García Fernández.
Another highlight was the presentation of the ACES-Margarita Salas Award, 3rd Edition, in the Biomedical Sciences category to Ana Fernández Sesma, recognizing her contribution to scientific advancement.
The treasury report, presented by Leire Alonso Galicia, showed very positive financial results.
We also welcomed new representatives nodes for the Umeå (Daniel Rea, PhD student at Umeå University), Skåne (Tania Ramos Moreno, group leader at the Lund Stem Cell Center), and Gothenburg (Julia Fernández Rodríguez, director of the Centre for Cellular Imaging at the University of Gothenburg). And now we have over 300 members! Member #300, Adrián, received a commemorative gift.
The event concluded on a fun and delicious note. Francisco Vilaplana updated us on RAICEX, and, together with Antonio, gave an engaging talk on the history and science behind croquettes, one of our most iconic dishes! Following the talk, we held a tasting competition where attendees anonymously voted for the best croquettes. The winner was Alejandro García Fernández, with his chorizo and egg croquettes, who received a symbolic prize.
